What we need is every one to get their personal tax allowance raised to get the most benefit from any rise. It has already been documented about any rise would throw more pensioners into paying tax

You're right, Peter. Not that I'm against a rise in my pension but, because I still work, I've been on emergency tax since the last rise, so I'm getting a little bit taken from my already meagre wage, so I'll get more taken the next time.

I've worked straight for 58 years, so I reckon I've paid more than my fair share.

Tom,

He left almost £30 Million

He was found NOT GUILTY of evading paying millions in tax, as he persuaded the court he did not understand money!

Folk would part with a lot of brass to be instructed in how not to understand money in his way. The line I liked best: "I told inland revenue that I did not owe them a penny, 'cause I lived by the seaside!"

I am surprised that you want to brand this as moaning, when from yourself we get a constant unwavering stream of 'more Alf Garnet than Alf Garnet'.

You need to look in the mirror.
Or pay some attention to the evaluation you are earning on here!

You try to pass yourself off as being critical of all politicians, yet constantly swipe at those out of power, and never a hint of any dissatisfaction with the others.

At least that horse rider Piggot got jailed.

How Dodd was found not guilty of fraud and tax evasion, beggars belief.
The clown said that he could not understand money but yet had 20 bank accounts in Jersey and the Isle of Man!

He even had the audacity to get married a few days before he died, just to avoid paying inheritance tax!

Lester Piggot was jailed because of sheer stupidity on his part.
He’d reached a settlement with the Inland revenue for £3 million. The cheque he passed over to the revenue was drawn on an account he hadn’t declared.

Dodd should have been jailed.
He was a fraud and a con man.
He had money stashed in other houses as well as his own attic.
He was very well known for being extremely frugal.
He rinsed the economy of thousands of pounds by being paid in cash and not declaring it. Its people like him that have made our economy less wealthy. Its the residents of the UK what pay the price for incidents like this
If you are doing a job and being paid cash, you should declare it.

I do not approve of all these benefits.

Supporting people who have disabilities or chronic illness, fair enough.

But surely it is healthier that working people earn sufficient to sustain their normal expenses incurred in living a normal life.

If the state takes dosh from some categories of working people, to give it to other categories (some of whom would also be included in the former) it seems to me you are bound to end up with perverse outcomes and perverse incentives.

It is perhaps most clearly seen when help for first time buyers results in them being subsidised by renters who are in a more disadvantaged financial situation.

I know some will disagree, but I think when earnings gave you the wherewithal to meet your needs relatively independent of the state, we were better off.

The cost of benefit fraud and tax evasion carried out on our shores by uk citizens is far far in excess of what the government is currently paying out to house and tend for immigrants. The strange thing is Uk citizens (including several in here) seem totally oblivious to the fact.

It’s like wearing trousers with holes in the pockets. If you start loosing money through those holes you will soon get a new pair. However our government doesn’t seem to be able to find a new pair that fits!!!

Any government who came up with an effective policy to end the widespread tax and benefit fiddles currently being carried out by what is its own electorate would put them in a strong position to get my vote.

Unfortunately it seems non of them to date see it as a priority or have been able to effectively tackle the issue.

I always thought that the Pensions Scheme should be paid not on age but on your profession a person who has worked with his hands AKA construction should not have there retirement at the same age as someone who sits at a desk all day..

Stardelta good analogy

Most people on here are at the age when you had the final salary Pensions Scheme that has long gone today...
In years to come there is going to be a lot more poverty in the UK because people have not had the money to put away or a property to sell and fall back on and also take into consideration the low birth rate and dislike of immigration plus people living longer in the UK will all lead to less tax in the public purse unless you will increase Tax on the rich or salary's .... there is no more of i will move out of the UK were my pension will go further.....

Anyone who has worked all their live and paid tax and national insurance should not be paying tax when retired, especially when private pensions have devalued so much from what people were told they would get when they first joined a private pension scheme.

If I had my time again, I would have not contracted out of the state scheme as it is the door to other retirements benefits like Pension Credit etc which has made many of the workshy better off than those who always worked for a living

What folk should realise is that in this country are now taxed more 'indirectly' than 'directly' as in we may pay less income tax, but the government has made up for that loss by putting up taxes like VAT (value added tax) because it is easier and cheaper to collect VAT from the likes of Asda, than to chase small business men around, using hoards of tax men, to collect trivial amounts of tax, so they give it away with one hand, and take it from yoo with the other hand, and it was the advent of computerisation in the 1960s and 1970s, which has made it possible for the government to do so.

Extract from the Spectator.

The reforms will be met with predictable howls of outrage, but this crackdown is overdue. State support ought to exist for those who cannot work, not those who cannot be bothered to work. The status quo is unsustainable: the DWP estimates that welfare spending on people with disabilities and health conditions will hit £100 billion by 2027, up 77 per cent from pre-pandemic levels. The bill for those of working age is on course to rise 84 per cent to £77.5 billion over the same period.
The numbers are staggering. In July to September, 1.45 million people were unemployed – meaning they are not in work but are looking for work, having done so at some point during the past four weeks. 8.73 million people aged 16-64 were economically inactive. 2.5 million people are out of work because of long-term health conditions, nearly half a million more than pre-pandemic. Studies show that most of them are complaining about anxiety, depression or other mental health issues.
Meanwhile, 3.5 million people aged 50 to 64 are out of work and not looking for work. That’s 280,000 more than in the first quarter of 2020 – a number around the size of the population of Milton Keynes. And though the government has set these early retirees in its sights, it’s unlikely they will be lured back into work having left it.
But here’s the problem that we’ll hear raised a lot over the next 12 months: the Tories have had years to fix this. The last time the party displayed boldness on the welfare issue was a decade ago, when Iain Duncan Smith introduced Universal Credit. He has since had eight successors.

What is this countries job ?

A cloo, Saudi Arabia get it's money from selling a natural resource it has in abundance, which is crude oil, so Saudi Arabia's job is to 'supply crude oil' to the world, but Britain does not have a job like that, so how does Britain make it's money ?

Britain uses the taxes from the money Britain has earned,, to pay it's bills.

Healthcare
Defence
Welfare
Pensions
Emergency Services
Police

etc etc etc

So where does Britain get it's money from Whupsy ?

In no way am I attacking the genurine ordinary honest people who need the benefit system to live on, only those cheating the system, especially those who are getting benefits while being involved in crime!

And I have noticed that some of those who come on here everyday moaning about the government are keeping quiet about the crackdown on benefit cheating.

really , well if you agree with jeremy hunt then you are indeed attacking genuine claimants because that,s exactly wot hunt is doing . he wants to impose ATOS like medicals for sick & mentaly ill people with medicals that are not done by doctors or medicaly trained clinicians & done by jumped up physios & therapists . we have all seen & heard the horror stories about ATOS who were under orders to get people off the dole by any means possible irrespective of illnness or injury & people with motor neurone disease & terminal cancer being found "fit for work" by this uncaring tory government . i also notice that when it comes to cheating the system that you dont inclue those who are well off & send their money out of the country to a "shell " company then claim it back as a "loan" & claim tax relief on that loan . so if you want to class yourself like jeremy hunt then it,s your prerogative .

ATOS is not fit for purpose.I took a friend who was really in a bad way and he was asked questions like could he make a cup of tea etc and other totally irrelavent questions but none about his medical condition.I asked why not and was told more or less to shut up.He recieved a letter and got no points at all in their assessment.I came to the conclusion he would have been better off telling lies. The woman doing the assessment appeared to have little medical knowledge and seemed not to care one bit, just reading out questions from a sheet.

I am against anyone in our society and that includes those at the top cheating the the system, but the ones I have been on about are those at our level who are fit and able and capable of doing a job, those claiming disibility benefits but can somehow manage to play golf nearly everyday, those driving around and parking with a Blue Badge which is not belonging to them, various types of insurance frauds etc, etc. The list is endless and would be no different whatever goverment is in power.

It is the likes of yourself and your cronies who tried to divert attention away from many of the cheats of our level by keep going on about those at the top when the cheating of the system is just as bad at the bottom.

How many more times do have you have to be told that I have no downer on the less fortuanate of the country, only those abusing the benefit system and the blue badge scheme which applies people to all levels and incomes of our society.

By your failure to comdem it, are you saying that you condone it?

yes you are as virtually ALL your posts confirm . you continually harp on about wot people are claiming & no thought given to those who are genuine & yes you try & cover your tracks by saying that you do but in reality you dont . typically you downbeat labour at every opportunity & seem to take the tory mantra & tar everyone with the same brush . you need to take a long hard look in the mirror & think how lucky you are not to be in the same position as a lot are . and still you never say a thing about the rich constantly robbing the country with sending their money out of the country with million or billions without paying a red cent while you browbeat someone who claims a paltry amount in some benefit . oh & by the way you just cant claim a blue badge you must have a medical for it just like you have to do with a benefit claim as it,s just not given out freely as you seem to think .

I am well aware that that people have to have a medical to get disability benefits, but the ones I am on about are those living on the non disibility benefits who will not work for a living and I am also aware that to have a Blue Badge, you have to be assess to have one, but here again I am on about are those who are using the badges of those assessd to which they on not entiltiled.

By the the reaction of yourself, Handsomeminer and Grimshaw anyone would think that you three were in involved in the abuse by the way you have all got so uptight, sarcastic and tried to twist what I have said.

Now toddle off back to the drinking and reading the Daily Mirror!

just shows your level of intelligence & lack of observation . you never said "non" disability benefits when you replied .here,s wot you put on further up this blog & tell me where it says non disability -

"Why do some assume that it is only the wealthy who are tax dodging.

Surely the same tax dodging criteria also applies to the many people who are being caught out for claiming benefits to which they are not entitled".

Whups,

The only real "less fortunate" are the homeless who because they have "no fixed abode" and cannot claim any benefits or even get a bank account.

Anyone else is not living in hardship or poverty as we now have a benefit system where you get far more today than years ago when the only benefits were Unemployment Benefit and Family Allowance and prior to the Attlee Labour government of 1945, no benefit system or free health service at all.

If indeed there are those living in hardship today, perhaps it is because of their self inflicted lifestyle of spending their incomes on things like alcohol, cigarettes. drugs etc.

Or perhaps not even having the latest Samsung Galaxy smart phone
